MRI Scanning Units

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanning is a test that produces very clear images of the brain without the use of X-rays. Clinical imaging in the form of MRI scans are often used to investigate headaches and migraines by specialists. In particular cases a neurologist may suggest alternative imaging techniques.

MRI scans in respect headaches and migraines generally take the form of MRI brain/head scan or neck MRI.

A small proportion of patients presenting with headaches and migraines are scanned to look for serious pathologies related to headache and migraines. A MRI scan is not able to diagnose migraines, cluster, or tension headaches; however, it is able to rule out other medical conditions, such as:

  • Brain tumor
  • Abscess (infection)
  • Hydrocephalus (the abnormal buildup of fluid in the brain)
  • Spinal cord problems, such as a herniated disc
  • Strokes
  • Injuries

Following a MRI scan, Headache Clinics UK requests that you bring the reports and films to each appointment should they need to be reviewed by your specialist neurologist or chiropractor.
